ABSTRACT

The lab class is a hands-on learning experience that gives students the skills and knowledge they need to design and create folding systems for various applications, including aerospace, robotics, and metamaterials.

COURSE CONTENT

The class is divided into three main sections:

  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD): Students will explore the realm of Computer-Aided Design, focusing on CAD software that allows them to create intricate folding patterns and structures parametrically.
  • Manufacturing Methods: Students will discover how to utilize various manufacturing technologies to bring their ideas to life. The emphasis is on getting students acquainted with equipment such as laser cutters, 3D printers, and CNC milling machines. Mastering these tools is crucial because it is the key to turning concepts into practical, functional systems.
  • Testing and Validation: This section equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure the reliability and performance of highly deployable systems. They will explore uniaxial and multiaxial testing methods, gaining a deep understanding of the significance of boundary conditions in experiments related to Poisson’s ratio. Furthermore, students will learn to employ high-speed cameras and motion-capture technology to meticulously analyze the folding and unfolding processes of their creations. This section is critical for validating the functionality and robustness of deployable.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

The teaching activity includes theoretical lessons, applications and exercises. The exam consists of a written test with multiple-choice questions on the topics of the course.
