Advanced Modeling of Exotic Metamaterials
- Hours 15
- ECTS 3
- Teacher Prof. DAL CORSO Francesco, Prof. MISSERONI Diego
Objectives
The design of artificial materials through microstructures allows to achieve mechanical properties not displayed by materials available in Nature. A proper representation of such unusual behaviour often requires an enhancement of the mechanical models usually presented in basic courses of Solid Mechanics. The course aims to introduce the special classes of materials displaying exotic mechanical properties and to provide the fundamentals of the advanced constitutive modeling.
Topics
The course covers the following two main subjects
- Extreme and reversed properties: Anisotropy and classes of symmetry, negative Poisson's ratio, negative stiffness, negative thermal expansion, negative compressibility, negative moisture expansion.
- Advanced modelling: local, nonlocal, and higher-order mechanical models. Higher-order deformation and stress measures. Principle of virtual work. Analytical solution for basic boundary value problems
Required Skills
Course of “Foundations of Mechanics and Acoustics”
Course Modality and Verification of Learning
The classes will be given in hybrid (i.e., onsite and online) format. The teaching activity includes theoretical lessons, applications and exercises.
The exam consists of a written test with multiple-choice questions on the topics of the course.
