Smart and Nano Metamaterials
- Hours 15
- ECTS 3
- Teacher Prof. LUTTEROTTI Luca
Objectives
The course aims to provide a fundamental understanding of nano and smart materials. The class will aim to teach the student the relationship of the materials characteristics (from crystal structure to nano-microstructure) with the peculiar properties of these materials. Some examples of nanotechnologies employing nano and smart materials will be presented. In particular some cases in which the smart characteristic is obtained by a particular nanostructure.
Topics
Smart materials: types and general characteristics
Shape change materials, piezo/pyro/electro-optic, electro- and magneto- strictive and rheological, GMC, GMR, CMR and thermoelectric materials
Nanomaterials types and definitions
Nanomaterials characteristics and properties (mechanical, thermal, electrical, magnetic)
Nanotechnologies: from Quantum Gates to Spin Valves
Required Skills
Materials science basic knowledge
Principles of mechanic, electricity and magnetism
Course Modality and Verification of Learning
The classes will be given in hybrid (i.e., onsite and online) format. The teaching activity includes theoretical lessons and some materials behaviour demonstration.
The results will be assessed through an oral (online if needed) examination. The questions will try to assess the capabilities of the student to relate materials characteristics to properties.
